The forensic scientists at the laboratory use their skills in classification, comparison, observation, and reconstruction to examine the evidence. They sometimes work "blind," meaning they don't know other details about the crime. The results of their work reveal more about the crime and are given back to the detective. This evidence is added to the information gathered from the interviews. The detective, working with the forensic scientists, is then responsible for making an inference based on the evidence and solving the crime.

When police acquire evidence at a crime scene they follow certain procedures to make sure the evidence is preserved and documented.Police must be able to prove tht the evidence was always in their possession.

  1. Each possible piece of evidence collected is put in its own container. The container is labeled and sealed.
  2. The label indicates where and when it was found and is initialed by the officer who found it.
  3. The evidence is then sent to the crime lab.

Once the evidence is received at the evidence lab the following procedures are taken:

  1. Each object is listed in the evidence register.
  2. Evidence is kept in a locked room. Only authorized people can examine it.
  3. An exact record is kept of each person who has handles the evidence.
  4. Evidence is examined by people who are specially trained to analyze and interpret it.

Hair Analysis
Chelsea Chichilla, Niki Chiki, and Genuis Cross- We have studied all the hair and it seems like the closest to the Crime Scene hair is Mrs. Guy. She said she recently had her hair dyed and so it had some gray and that is the most similar to the Crime Scene hair which is black and gray. We also had another sample of Mrs. Guy's hair and it had some black in it. Go to the final chart to see the results.
